A Quarter of a Century of Videomedeja in the Svilara Cultural Station


Svilara Cultural Station will host next week the three-day 25th International Video Art Festival Videomedeja, produced by the Videomedeja Video Art Association. The festival lasts from 14 to 16 October, and the programme will begin at 5 p.m. every day and last until 10 p.m. Entrance is free of charge.

The gala opening of the festival is planned for Thursday, 14 October at 7.30 pm, immediately after the screening of the Party film, directed by Aleksandar Davić.

In the space of the reconstructed former silk factory, one of the eight cultural stations that make up the network of cultural stations throughout Novi Sad, this festival, which has reached the European framework in the past quarter of a century, will gather famous artists from more than 40 countries. Among them are both local and world-famous creators of video art.

The festival consists of competition and non-competition part. The visitors will be able to see 58 works of art in the form of video, film, animation, media installations and interactive projects from different parts of the world. The programme was edited by Ivana Sremčević Matijević, Željko Mandić and Srđan Radaković. About 1000 works from all over the world arrived to the call, and up to 5% was included in the festival programme.

This year’s competition programme, where works of art that examine the political, social and cultural constructions of the system predominate, consists of 26 selected works from two selections – screenings: 20 works (video, film, animation) and media projects: 6 works (media installations and interactive projects).

The non-competition part of the programme includes a continuous festival programme, which this year consists of seven video works by local authors in the Made in Serbia selection and nine student art films from the Lunartis category that come from prestigious film academies around the world. The audience will have a chance to see the Party film, directed by Aleksandar Davić; Video restArt, a documentary by Ivana Sremčević Matijević on the topic of restart – half a century since the creation of video art in correlation with a quarter of a century of Videomedeja and 14 award-winning works of Sphinx – a selection of the best award-winning video works in the past 25 years of Videomedeja.

A three-member international jury consisting of: Zoran Naskovski (Serbia), Sylvia Winkler (Austria) / Stephan Köperl (Germany) and Adad Hannah (BC, Canada) will award the following prizes: the Sphinx Award for Best Work in the Projection category and the Bogdanka Poznanović Award for Best Work from the category Media projects, and there is a possibility for Acknowledgements and Audience Award.

The festival is held under the patronage of the City Administration for Culture of the City of Novi Sad, the Provincial Secretariat for Culture, Public Information and Relations with Religious Communities and the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia.
