Novi Sad holds the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture and is one of the first cities outside the European Union to have won the title.
Placed in the Almaš neighbourhood, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, the Novi
Sad factory for silk dyeing worked up until the 70s. Today, there is no more silk in the
area, but the old factory and the distinctive chimney generously kept the memory of the
times when Svilara was the generator of economic and social development of the
neighbourhood.
Svilara has been initiated and accepted by the local community, while supported and
implemented within the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project. It is an
excellent example of revitalization and synergy of different stakeholders joined because
of the common values and goals that they share. Being suitable for artistic contents and
programmes, with the main programme topic being cultural heritage itself, Svilara
portrays a true example of this neighbourhood’s cultural heritage.
A long-standing initiative of the local community to announce the Almaš neighbourhood a
protected, ambient-historical unit, together with the energy that the Svilara Cultural
Station brought, happened in June 2019. In the 21st century, Svilara continues with
production, but this time it’s producing ideas and creativity.
All artists, organisations and citizens with creative ideas are welcome to the Svilara Cultural Station.
